PERIMENOPAUSE

The time of life near the onset of menopause is a transition period. While still having regular menstrual cycles almost all women begin to notice early symptoms of menopause around or soon after age forty. This transition period, with falling or fluctuating hormone levels (hormonal imbalance), is the basic marker of perimenopause.

Menopause itself isn’t far ahead.

MENOPAUSE

Actual menopause is the absence of menstrual periods for twelve months. The menopausal transition starts with varying menstrual cycle length, and ends with the final menstrual period. Menopause is not a disease or an illness. It is a transition between two natural phases of any woman’s life.

Menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, loss of libido, mood swings, and hair thinning are caused by changing hormonal levels in the female reproductive system. Symptoms of menopause usually last for the whole menopause transition (until the mid-50s). But some women may experience them for the rest of their lives. The intensity and duration of symptoms vary from woman to woman. While some women are lucky enough to breeze through the “change of life” years – others may require some support from either their physician (HRT, Hormone Replacement Therapy) or a more natural route. We always recommend to consult your physician first.

MOST COMMON MENOPAUSE SYMPTOMS
Changes in menstrual periods Bone loss
Hot flashes, nights sweats, & insomnia Stress
Mood swings Forgetfulness
Weight gain (decrease in HDL; increase in LDL) Palpitations
Fatigue Hair thinning & dry skin
Loss of Libido Vaginal dryness

Menstrual irregularity is usually the first sign of the hormonal imbalance leading to menopause. Monthly periods may become heavier or lighter and/or occur at irregular intervals. Hot flashes (aka hot flushes), night sweats, and mood swings are also telltale indications of menopause.

CAUSES OF MENOPAUSAL WEIGHT GAIN

Weight gain associated with menopause can be particularly distressing.

Levels of estrogen – Shifts in the level of estrogen in your system can have an effect on bodyweight. With the ovaries producing less estrogen, fat cells can “take up the slack” of declining estrogen production. The result can be added bodyweight.

Reduced physical activity – Menopausal symptoms themselves can make women less inclined to participate in exercise and other healthful physical activities –with additional consequences.
